I don't watch a lot of TV but the "can't miss" show I watch now is "Fargo" If you haven't seen it, it's kind of a sequel to the Coen Brothers "Fargo" movie. Many references to other Coen Brothers films. The actors and especially Billy Bob Thornton, are terrific.

I too love this new version of Fargo. The movie has long been a favorite of mine and I was very skeptical of a new take on the idea, but it works very well and Walter is right the performances are pretty amazing across the board.

As for other TV shows, we've been really into the new seasons of 'Orange is the New Black' and 'Orphan Black' at my house.

I, too, am a big Fargo fan. Loved the movie, too.

Finally got around to True Detective... and then watched the entirety of it in a day.

For those that saw both Fargo and True Detective, this is pretty good article: http://www.avclub.com/article/true-dete ... was-205842

Here's a quote form the beginning of the article: "Yes, the two shows have a lot in common: They’re both deeply strange, single-season forays into the crime genre that make the most of their miniseries format. They both have a couple of movie stars who were only able to commit because of the series’ “one and done” natures. They’ve both prompted any number of critical raves and think pieces. Both had somewhat disappointing finales. And neither has been officially renewed for a second season just yet..."

Stop whatever you're doing, seriously change your plans, and go see 'Whiplash.'

It's that good.

Birdman was good too, but not quite as good.

Also, on Netflix I've been watching a lot of Foyle's War.

Dang, I really wanna see it but it's not playing around here! And I agree Birdman was pretty good.

Started watching Peaky Blinders on Netflix. Very good. Most of the score is Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds.

I'm not a huge "foodie" or whatever, but I'm really enjoying Chef's Table on Netflix--the episodes keep getting better and better. It's very interesting to see the different perspectives of people that are operating at the most elite levels of their craft.

I love North By Northwest, and I'd always assumed the opening sequence was Madison Ave – and I'd always like Hitchcock's cameo, missing a bus in the first minute of the film.

Image

Now, this article makes a shaky claim that he misses that bus on Madison between 44th and 45th – so directly across the street from our friends at 346 Madison.

I thought that was interesting enough to share – it'll come up next time I drag a bored movie buff with me to look at ties.

I flew Internationally over the holidays, and had the pleasure of watching far to many films in the process. Some of these films will probably be Oscar contenders, some not so much, here are a few thoughts:

Bridge of Spies: A great movie, well written (Nice to see the Cohen's work in Speilberg technicolor) and well acted. There's some great classic menswear that would be of interest to the membership
Mr. Holmes: Charming and Fun, slightly slow.
Ricki and the Flash: Meryl and John Demme are capable of better (If you've not seen Rachel Getting Married please do), that being said this isn't terrible, and has quite a few good moments, overall it's a C or C+
Mad Max Fury Road: Holy crap this movie is intense. You get about 5 seconds of setup and then it doesn't let up for 2+ hours. It was a really fun ride, nice to see some feminism in an action flick, and Tom Hardy is fantastic.
Mistress America: (in the interest of full disclosure: I love Noah Baumbach) I get the feeling I'm one of the few people who likes this movie, this could be because it's so silly and light, the characters aren't always redeeming, and nothing really happens. With all that being said, Mr. Baumbach is slowly and somewhat quietly becoming the Woody Allen of his generation.
The Martian: Finally, a blockbuster that's praise is well deserved. Damon has a great shot at Best Actor for this role.
Black Mass: When was the last time Depp was good in something? I honestly can't remember. He's quite good in this, but he doesn't really have the best material to work with, the effect is similar to that of 'The Iron Lady' a few years back - great performance, meh movie. I also read this book for some reason (I got it for free and it was hard to stop once I started) and it's kind of amazing how much gets left out in this film.

I loved Mistress America. Not my favorite of Baumbach's work, but still quite enjoyable. I, too, am a Baumbach devotee.

Glad to hear it RMP!

See any good movies lately?

Along with the above list, I also saw Spotlight and really enjoyed it.

Has anyone seen Carol or the Big Short?

^ As a newspaper reporter by trade I really need to see Spotlight. But, as a newspaper reporter by trade, I don't have any time to see Spotlight! I really haven't seen much lately that's new. I did break out some Bergman the other night. Scenes from a Marriage is and will always be a favorite.
