Leeds 2.0 (whatever that means) from the seconds department at Allen Edmonds

Image

The flaw seems to be a slight smear of brown stuff on the side of one sole.

The redesigned AE website now has all the seconds, which is a big improvement.

Victims of my recent purge include sweaters that are simply too small for the 2018 edition of yours truly. (Most of them went to Tweedy Don, so keep your eyes peeled if your are a large or a 42-ish regular.)

To replace the humble but supremely useful Lands End cotton Drifter sweater vests, I ordered two new ones, now in XL. I am pleased to report they are exactly like the old ones except bigger.

The two new LL Bean lambswool V-necks are disappointing however. They are considerably thinner than the sweaters they are replacing. Serviceable, and I'm going to keep them, but if you are thinking about replacing an old Bean sweater be forewarned.

Edit: I have done these sweaters a disservice. I was replacing Shetlands, which are a different animal and are not in Bean's catalog at the moment. So these are just fine and I heartily endorse them if you like that sort of thing. Very unforgiving if you have any sort of a belly though.

(I've always thought the only honest answer to "Do these make my butt look fat?" is "No, it's your fat that makes your butt look fat." And as soon as the portable personal force field is perfected I'll start saying it.)

I bought two white and two blue BB buttondowns in the sale. Gotta say, they ship lickety-split. Ordered Wednesday morning and they arrived yesterday after lunch.

These are getting their maiden voyage tomorrow. Doesn't look like they've seen much action, does it? One or two wears, maybe. Found them on Etsy for about $40. Haonver stopped making shoes in the USA mid-90s, I think.

I have some vintage Hanovers that I consider to be very good shoes.

I've been on a tear, scooping up old Viyella sport shirts with open collars for the Irish poet look.

Did I tell you guys about that? I was covering a talk in the library in Norfolk (pronounced Norfork, as opposed to the one in Virginia, pronounced Norfuck).

(Let's see if that makes it past the electronic watchdog.)

I was wearing a slouchy tweed and one of these old shirts and a pair of baggy lined chinos and LL Bean boots. Some lady asked me if I had an Irish name, "because you look like an Irish poet."

"Marvin Liebowitz, at your service," sez I.

In the Virginia City of Norfolk, the lovely young Cheerleaders at the local High School start all their cheerleading sessions with the following cheer:
"We are the girls of Norfolk High,
We don't drink and we don't smoke,
Norfolk... Norfolk... Norfolk... High!"

I've been checked out on here for a little while since heading back to school, but I had to share this score. Grant Stone has a couple models that I've wanted to add to the rotation for a while, the blue CXL loafers and the tan CXL bluchers, and I was able to scratch both those itches over the last week. The loafers came with dust bags, original box, and all the other extras plus a pair of split toe trees, same for the bluchers. There's maybe ten wears combined between the two.

While the bluchers aren't quite natural CXL, I guess whiskey shell will do.

I like the bluchers. Can't do the blue loafers. I'm hidebound and reactionary that way.

Been finding some really nice jackets and suits at the Goodwill recently and will post pictures when I get them back from the cleaners. I’ve been looking to replace my green blazer that I lost many years ago. On a recent drive to a thrift store, I started thinking about that blazer and how much i’d Like to find one. Well........it’s like the gods were smiling upon me as the first jacket I saw on the racks was a 2 button, bottle green Shefford blazer by Anderson-Little. Darted, but in absolute immaculate condition and best of all, it fits me like a glove. Not a bad find for $5.00 +$9.00 cleaning.

I’ve asked Scott Anderson over at the “mothership” about the Shefford, but he hasn’t responded.

Shefford was one of three sub-brands created in 1981, with some success. They are positioned relative to quality and pricing. Strathmore was at the high end, Shefford in the middle, and Southport at the bottom. The fit was the same across all brands.

Top,

Excellent information. Thank you sir. The article from 1983 is interesting with lots of good info on a bygone era. I found this tidbit amusing......”This practice, known as ''branding''....”. Such a ubiquitous concept today, branding in 1983 was still something we were learning about.

Thanks again for the reply.

Recent thrift find. Ben Silver Harris Tweed Aquascutum jacket in absolutely outstanding condition. This is thick and heavy, perfect for cold wet days. (Un)fortunately we don’t have very many days like that here in Charleston, so I can see why the jacket is still in such fine condition. It’s not one of Ben Silver’s 2-button sacks, but is darted. Has a more fitted English cut, but fits me perfectly. It’s a light tan with some blue and a hint of olive blended in. Thanks to Mrs. Reddington for spotting this one on the racks. $5 well spent.

I honestly don't mind darts on a jacket like that.
