It does sound like the intro to a lame bit from a comedian.

In recent years I have solidified, and no amount of diet and exercise can change the fact that I am now a pretty solid 44, 37 waist, and my neck now clocks in at 17.5.

(I can do 17 but I have neck claustrophobia. I'd rather have it a little loose than verging on tight.)

Replacing shirts is proving to be the hard part. The untreated options are few and far between, and the obvious one -- Mercer -- is so expensive as to be impractical except as a rare treat.

Press at sale time is the other obvious answer.

Meanwhile, I diligently plow through the eBay and Etsy options. Almost all of them are non-iron. And 17.5 x 33 is not a popular size.

For a while I got by with JAB's untreated oxfords, but they seem to have vanished.

I just got a couple LE shirts, what they call poplin, and they are acceptable.

On the "If you can't beat 'em join 'em" side, I tried a couple of Amazons and Kirklands. They seem identical, and I wouldn't be surprised to learn they are cranked out in the same Malaysian factory.

I honestly prefer non-iron for point collars. I'm going for a crisp look there anyway.

But these non-iron buttondowns just don't achieve that level of genteel rumpledness (rumptility?) I seek.

I was at the outlet mall in Lee, Mass. a couple weeks ago and the Brooks shirts were uniformly non-iron, and averaged sleeves to boot. Except for a greater variety of patterns, they don't seem any better or worse than the cheap-os from Bezos & Costco.

It's discouraging.

I'm thinking I should just save my shekels and buy five or 10 proper Oxfords from Press at holiday time and be done with it for a while.

I've never had good luck with current Press shirting, weird collars in several different ways. Cursory search of the 'bay brought back a few decent results in your ball park: ... :rk:2:pf:0 ... rk:12:pf:0 ... :rk:9:pf:0 ... :rk:3:pf:0 ... :rk:3:pf:0 ... 0005.m1851
