I stopped in to pick up a gift for a friend on Friday afternoon, while I was being rung up the salesman took a phone call. As the call went on, much longer than I thought it would, things got a little tense. He was very apologetic when it ended, and then said that unfortunately the store was in the process of losing it's lease.

I'm not sure any of the details right now, but from what he said, they'll most likely be out by the end of the month. They've been in the same location in the heart of the Square since 1930.

With Charlie Davidson retiring and trying to sell the Andover Shop just around the corner, Harvard Square is in for major changes in the immediate future.

So I stopped by yesterday afternoon to check out what's going on at the old gal, there's only a week left. The front of the shop is plastered with signs about the closing that tout "up to 80% off."

As usual with J Press, it's sort of confusing what's actually on sale. The salesman I spoke with starts by listing all the things that are still full price (it's a long list), then there are various small discounts on some things (but nothing is really labeled), and there are a couple of areas where things are 80% off. On one end of the store there are some louder ties and some very tiny belts at full discount, and on the other end there's a rack of sport coats in a wide range of styles and seasons, a pile of shirts on a table, and some shoes, all at full discount. But the thing is none of this merchandise is very current, so every jacket I try on fits poorly and has ghastly shoulders, there was one nice shirt in my size in a pattern I've been after for awhile now, but the collar was short, stiff (probably lined and fused), and didn't roll even when I tugged on it.

The worst thing to me about this whole mess is that J Press was finally starting to get it right, the suit that I bought earlier this year is great in several different ways, but all the discounted things currently in the shop are the dregs of the down years that we all spent so long complaining about. The nicer current stuff was there still, don't get me wrong, but it was really picked over and there weren't many sizes left anymore. I really hope that J Press continues in the direction they headed this past season, despite this terrible setback.

On the plus side, if you're looking for Allen Edmonds at 80% off you should call the Cambridge store because they have a pile of 'em.
