The holiday season is, at last, behind us — except for the secular holiday of the Super Bowl.

My goal always is to keep things as low-key as possible. This was accomplished.

Christmas day, at my mom's new place here in Salisbury, Conn. The management frowns on live trees for fire safety reasons, but we ignored that and installed a mini-tree (in fact a tree top) purchased from the Housatonic Valley FFA chapter.

Mid-week Mom and I went to the Norman Rockwell Museum in West Stockbridge, Mass. My tolerance for art museums is admittedly low, but it was fun and instructive. And they had trains.

On the way back we visited friends in Egremont, Mass., who live in a house originally built in 1750 or so by a Dutch guy who married an Indian chief's daughter and received most of the land in what is now southwest Berkshire county and northwest Litchfield county (Conn.), plus a sliver of New York, as a wedding present. It didn't last long but hey.

And there was a very informal New Year's Eve dinner party, which I was able to slither out of at 10 p.m. At age 53, I was the youngest person in the room by two decades at least.

PS: And the Christmas pageant...

Very nice.

I wish I could get away with placing shipping boxes under the tree, but Mrs. Ensiferous insists upon the redundant and purely ornamental wrapping paper rigmarole.

Slithering out of a party; yes, much more easily executed while running solo. Traveling partners tend to bog that maneuver down badly.

I have friends in South Egremont. Their home and property are truly fantastic.

I'm personally a big fan of the Irish Goodbye.

That's really the best way to go, in my opinion.

Here's a quick shot of my girlfriend's place, all decorated up for Christmas. It's a beautiful little mountain cabin and I was house-sitting for her to make sure the chickens, cats, dogs, and tree were all healthy.

Sadly I didn't get pictures of my father, my little brother, and I wearing our matching christmas critter cords.
