I'm planning a one-week trip in late July for my wife and I to Rhode Island/CT. Neither of us have been there before.

I'm seeking recommendations on places to visit, great restaurants, places to stay (we prefer B&Bs to hotels).

The main cities of interest are Newport and Old Lyme and locales in-between. Providence is another city we may want to visit.

Here's some ideas off the top of my head...

Newport, RI:
International Tennis Hall of Fame and Museum
National Museum of American Illustration
Cardines Field
White Horse Tavern
Freebody Park (where "Jazz on a Summer's Day" was filmed)
Newport Art Museum

Old Lyme, CT:
Florence Griswold Museum
Bee and Thistle Inn and Spa

Providence:
Brown Univ. campus
H.P. Lovecraft sites

I welcome your ideas and suggestions.

I just returned from spending 8 fabulous days in Rhode Island and Connecticut with my wife. We hit all the spots mentioned in my post above, plus a few more. Thought I'd share some travel photos, starting with Newport:

Freebody Park, where "Jazz on a Summer's Day" was filmed. Today it has a few softball fields, a football field, and a children's playground. The stone wall and houses behind it made identification easy:



The International Tennis Museum, where an original 1920s Lacoste tennis blazer is on display:





The White Horse Tavern, where drinks have been served since 1673:





We took a sunset cruise on a schooner, from which we viewed Hammersmith Farm, former summer home of the Auchincloss family:

While in Connecticut, we visited Essex. It's everything I expected of a quaint, stone-walled, New England village:



We also stayed in Stonington, CT. It was very much like Newport, with a beautiful harbor, gorgeous sunsets and lovely architecture, but without the cheesy tourist shops:





Then back to Rhode Island and Watch Hill, where we lunched at the Ocean House. What a marvelous place!



In fact, Watch Hill's location on the Atlantic is so enticing, Taylor Swift bought an estate here:

Lastly, we visited Providence. We stayed on Benefit Street, which had some of the oldest homes we saw during our entire trip. Among them was the "Shunned House" from H.P. Lovecraft's novella (originally built in 1763):



We also saw one of the homes where Lovecraft lived:



And, true to "Take Ivy," we visited the campus of Brown University:

Truly great stuff! Watch hill is one of my favorite beaches, and Newport and parts of Providence are really beautiful. Great photos.
